Nationally known consumer and gift products catalog company ABC Distributing partners with a number of nonprofit organizations that assist children and families, and none is engaged in more important work than Books for America. The group channels donations of used and new books, recorded music, movies, and computers to Washington, D.C.-area schools and other institutions that serve people in need.
With only a small budget and staff of seven, Books for America promotes literacy by providing children with the sense of pride that comes from owning their first books. The group also donates books and learning materials to shelters and prisons to assist adults interested in improving their lives, and through its bookstore, Books for America benefits community agencies by sharing the proceeds from the sale of overflow items provided by supporters.
Recently, Books for America contributed some 10,000 novels to a local parks and recreational agency to expand adults’ literacy skills. It also gave more than 4,000 books to a Virginia correctional center and hundreds more to a local nursing home facility. Elementary and charter schools in underserved areas have also been able to expand their students’ worlds thanks to books from the organization. On account of this and his group’s other inspiring work, Books for America’s founder received a recent honor from the Washington, D.C., chapter of Reach Out and Read.
