The Value of Workplace Fitness

Presented by ABC Distributing

Veteran business-to-business and business-to-consumer merchandiser ABC Distributing has served clients for more than 50 years. The company provides a wide range of high-quality goods both online and in a series of seasonal catalogues to individuals and businesses around the country. In addition to a strong reputation for quality merchandise and customer service, ABC Distributing maintains a deep commitment to community service and workplace fitness initiatives, including participating in the Walter & Connie Payton Foundation 7th Annual Kendall County ‘€œSweetness’€ 5K & 8K Run/Walk and the JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge in 2011. The company encourages workplace fitness in order to support the benefits that its employees have reaped from the programs.

In addition to our charitable endeavors, ABC Distributing made an effort to support workplace fitness by participating in several local running events in 2011. Encouraging a group engagement with fitness in the office offers employees a range of benefits, including stress reduction, positivity, confidence, and goal setting experience.

Through these fitness programs, ABC Distributing has demonstrated a dedication to its employees, not only in the office but throughout their lives by fostering an environment where health and wellness are highly valued. In recent years, fitness experts have increasingly warned of the dangers of a sedentary “office worker” lifestyle. Experts have also found that fitness and exercise can improve office performance, help avoid illness, and spark creativity and energy during the day.

One of the best ways a company can encourage friendly competition and employee fitness is to model it as a serious priority, often through official participation in athletic events like the JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge or a local running event. Encouraging wellness among employees brings many benefits not just for those individuals but for the company as a whole in the form of a feeling of unity, increased energy, and positive mood changes.

Books for America Assists Children and Adults without Advantages by ABC Distributing

Nationally known consumer and gift products catalog company ABC Distributing partners with a number of nonprofit organizations that assist children and families, and none is engaged in more important work than Books for America. The group channels donations of used and new books, recorded music, movies, and computers to Washington, D.C.-area schools and other institutions that serve people in need.

With only a small budget and staff of seven, Books for America promotes literacy by providing children with the sense of pride that comes from owning their first books. The group also donates books and learning materials to shelters and prisons to assist adults interested in improving their lives, and through its bookstore, Books for America benefits community agencies by sharing the proceeds from the sale of overflow items provided by supporters.

Recently, Books for America contributed some 10,000 novels to a local parks and recreational agency to expand adults’ literacy skills. It also gave more than 4,000 books to a Virginia correctional center and hundreds more to a local nursing home facility. Elementary and charter schools in underserved areas have also been able to expand their students’ worlds thanks to books from the organization. On account of this and his group’s other inspiring work, Books for America’s founder received a recent honor from the Washington, D.C., chapter of Reach Out and Read.

About the Author: Family-owned ABC Distributing is proud to have participated in book drives that benefitted Books for America. The company encourages its customers to support book donation and literacy efforts in their own communities.

Born in Mississippi in 1954, Payton rose through the NFL to become one of the sport’s most celebrated running backs, earning Player of the Year and MVP awards in 1977 during his time playing for the Chicago Bears. Over the course of his career, he racked up 16,726 rushing yards and 110 touchdowns, earning him the rank of all-time leader in combined net and running yards. Known as “Sweetness,” Payton played 186 consecutive games, only missing one game during his rookie years.

Near the end of his life, Payton was diagnosed with a progressive liver disease. Bile duct cancer claimed his life in early November of 1999. Payton, already a hero in Chicago, generated tremendous response for the cause. Following his death, the Walter and Connie Payton Foundation continued his work, holding charitable events such as the Sweetness Run and school supply donations for children.

Ways to Support The Salvation Army By ABC Distributing

One of the most recognizable names in charitable giving, The Salvation Army is a faith-based organization that meets a wide range of human needs. In addition to its well-known housing and shelter services, The Salvation Army also sponsors programs such as disaster relief, youth camps, locating missing persons, and combating human trafficking. As a charitable organization, The Salvation Army owes much of its success to its expansive network of volunteers and individuals who provide valuable contributions in all forms. Here is a quick overview of the many ways to support The Salvation Army.

Give Frequent Flier Miles

Through various programs with major airlines such as United and Delta, people can donate their air miles to The Salvation Army, which uses them to move volunteer personnel around the country in the wake of natural disasters and other emergencies. The United Airlines Charity Miles Program, one of the many ways people can donate their frequent flier miles, successfully reunited a needy family with a father dying of cancer. Through its partnership with the Delta SkyWish Program, The Salvation Army has reunited military families and moved emergency medical supplies to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Donate an Automobile

The Salvation Army frequently accepts donations in the form of cars, boats, and other vehicles. Thanks to the generous donations of individuals across the country, The Salvation Army uses the vehicles in its Adult Rehabilitation Centers, which assist individuals affected by alcohol and drug addiction in getting back on their feet.

Volunteer

For those who lack the financial means to donate or simply wish to contribute their time, The Salvation Army welcomes all volunteers to assist in accomplishing its mission of “Doing the Most Good.” In the year 2010 alone, more than 3.4 million individuals volunteered their talents, resources, and time in a variety of capacities. Through its Volunteer Match program, The Salvation Army pairs volunteers with the opportunities that best fit their interests and capabilities.

Contribute Monetarily

One of the most classic ways to give, monetary contributions play an integral role in the operations of The Salvation Army. Interested individuals can donate in a variety of ways, including The Salvation Army website and the red collection tins displayed during the holiday season.
