Books for America Assists Children and Adults without Advantages by ABC Distributing

Nationally known consumer and gift products catalog company ABC Distributing partners with a number of nonprofit organizations that assist children and families, and none is engaged in more important work than Books for America. The group channels donations of used and new books, recorded music, movies, and computers to Washington, D.C.-area schools and other institutions that serve people in need.

With only a small budget and staff of seven, Books for America promotes literacy by providing children with the sense of pride that comes from owning their first books. The group also donates books and learning materials to shelters and prisons to assist adults interested in improving their lives, and through its bookstore, Books for America benefits community agencies by sharing the proceeds from the sale of overflow items provided by supporters.

Recently, Books for America contributed some 10,000 novels to a local parks and recreational agency to expand adults’ literacy skills. It also gave more than 4,000 books to a Virginia correctional center and hundreds more to a local nursing home facility. Elementary and charter schools in underserved areas have also been able to expand their students’ worlds thanks to books from the organization. On account of this and his group’s other inspiring work, Books for America’s founder received a recent honor from the Washington, D.C., chapter of Reach Out and Read.

About the Author: Family-owned ABC Distributing is proud to have participated in book drives that benefitted Books for America. The company encourages its customers to support book donation and literacy efforts in their own communities.

ABC Distributing Discusses Corporate Social Responsibility (2/2)

In a previous article, we described how corporate social responsibility (CSR) continues to increase nationwide. In this installment, we consider the impact of company ownership and firm size in philanthropy.

Overall, private companies may explore charitable giving with greater ease, because they do not have to vet proposed projects before masses of shareholders. A private enterprise may support causes that its owners believe in, regardless of whether those causes directly align with the business’ purpose. Just as companies vary greatly in their lines of business, so do the types of nonprofits that organizations support.

In the case of ABC Distributing, employees assist a number of local charities, including a women’s shelter, The Salvation Army, and nonprofits focused on children. Each summer, ABC Distributing staffers collect school supplies for young people and donate them through the Walter and Connie Payton Foundation.

The size of an organization can also impact CSR. As companies grow, their leaders may decide to establish foundations to support philanthropic pursuits. They may also create more formal and strategic giving plans.
